September
22, 2008 - Hilo, HI - Bordering
the western side of downtown
Hilo, the Wailuku River is home
to the wondrous Rainbow Falls.
The falls illustrate the namesake
of the Wailuku ("water
of destruction") which
became violent and, in the days
before bridges, impassable during
Hilo's rainy season.
The falls tumble 80 feet into
a large pool, and the spray
from the cascade is known to
create a prism of color, especially
in glare of the early morning
sun. Hence the name Rainbow
Falls.
Behind the falls is a deep cave,
said to be home to the legendary
goddess, Hina.
The area is one of Hilo's most
popular attractions.
