Police search for Kona purse snatcher

Robber grabs purse from woman on Kuakini Highway, eludes chasing bystanders

May 23, 2010 – Kailua-Kona, Hawaii

Big Island police are investigating a purse snatching that happened on Saturday night in Kona, and are asking the public for information.

Police say the alleged robber approached a 67 year old Kailua-Kona woman from behind as she walked north on Kuakini Highway around 7:45 p.m., and pulled her purse off her arm. The suspect then fled on foot towards downtown Kailua Village, outrunning the victim and three bystanders who chased after him.

Police say the vicitm suffered pain to her right arm and hand because of the robbery.

The suspect is described as a local male in his early 20s, about 5-foot-6 and 200 pounds. He was wearing dark long pants with cuffs, a long-sleeved shirt and a knitted cap.

The Area II Criminal Investigations Section will continue the investigation.

Police ask that anyone with information about this case call the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. All Crime Stoppers calls are kept confidential.
