VIDEO: Kealakekua Bay planning criticized

June 11, 2010 – Kealakekua Bay, Hawaii
As the state moves forward with an update to the Master Plan for the Kealakekua area, a group of local residents stand opposed to the planning process.
In this video, resident and activist Chuck Flaherty talks about the issues he and others have with the state’s plan.

I am happy to have this source to get important information about the sacred and special places like Kealakekua. It is impossible to get to all of these meetings and have those close to the issues that we care about educate us…so I appreciate Big Island Video News and what it offers in this regard. Kealakekua is an incredibly beautiful place and the people who live there and play there should be heard and consulted before any actions are taken in the area by agencies of government. I agree that spending a lot of money to study the subject without allowing those concerned to share, is not pono.
Very informative interview with Mr Flaherty. I would like the links to the visuals/maps in the video. As a further comment on the new kayak rules I am disappointed that the tourists do not seem to be getting the message. I’ve been hiking to the north side of the bay for over thirty years and have seen a dramatic increase in the use of the bay. While the new rules are very clear, they are evidently not enforced. None of the kayakers landing at the monument area this morning had permits or were aware of where they should land if they had them. All the kayaks were drug up on the rocks on either side of the Cook Monument. I don’t think DLNR would have to impound very many kayaks before the venders would communicate better with their customers
