Hawaiian Ocean View Estates brushfire update

UPDATE - June 12, 2010 – Hawaiian Ocean View Estates

According to the Hawaii County Fire Department, Thursday’s brushfire burned about 80 acres of “Wildland urban interface” between Luau, Tiki, Princess Kaiulani and Paradise in the Hawaiian Ocean View Estates subdivision. 3 structures were reported destroyed by the fire: 2 were said to be unoccupied and the third was a greenhouse.

20 to 30 homes were saved from the fire thanks to the efforts of the fire department and volunteers.

The fire department said the cause of the fire was an “unattended barbeque”.

H.O.V.E. resident Joshua Merez admitted as much to KITV on Friday night’s broadcast, apologizing to neighbors for the brushfire.

ORIGINAL REPORT – June 10, 2010 – Hawaiian Ocean View Estates, Hawaii

Reports of a brushfire burning in Hawaiian Ocean View Estates on the remote, southwest side of the Big Island are being broadcast on news stations and social media sites this evening.

Details are few, although KITV has reported that a few homes have possibly been burned.

The Hawaii County Police Department issued this alert via the Nixle message service.  

Due to a brushfire in HOVE in Kau the following roads are closed: Tiki & Paradise Pkwy between Luau & Princess Kaiulani
