The 2010 International Haari Boat Festival was held at Wailoa State Park in Hilo this weekend.

Teams – many of them representing politicians running in this year’s election – practiced with the decorative sabani boats on Friday. On Saturday, the teams competed in three divisions for prizes and bragging rights.

Paddlers utilized speed and cooperative skill in tandem, synchronized to the beat of a traditional gong at the rear of the boat.

The entire event was like an ongoing party, as vendors and musicians set up camp to complement the friendly competition.
