KIALUA-KONA, Hawaii: The Hawaii County Fire Department continues to keep a close eye on a brushfire that burned 400 acres off Hina Lani street and Queen Kaahumanu Highway.

The open field fire – today in its 4th day – has been thoroughly extinguished, the fire department says, with 5 to 6 hotspots extinguished Saturday and one extinguished Sunday morning. “Captain Matsuda did a complete walkaround and survey of the perimeter of the fire on Saturday afternoon” said a fire dispatch, “and recommended one last day for monitoring.”

According to the dispatch, Captain Sam Lee spoke with Battalion Chief Steve Loyola on Sunday morning and will do a final walk around and perimeter survey before wrapping up the incident sometime in the early Sunday afternoon.

The blaze caused about $40,000 in damages, fire officials say. The owner is unknown. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
