Recent heavy rainfall on the east side of Hawaii’s Big Island has caused many of the scenic waterfalls on the Hamakua Coast to swell, and has even created some smaller “falls” where none existed before (or at least during “dry” times.)

The famous Akaka Falls was a swollen cascade, thundering downstream towards the ocean.

Meanwhile, small waterfall outbreaks were created by the deluge, like the one along Highway 11 in Papaikou, seen in the footage above.

The areas of Papaikou (especially regions mauka) and Wailea and Hakalau were recently encouraged to practice water conservation due to drought-like conditions. It is unclear, at the moment, how the recent rainfall has affected the drought.
