Battalion Chief Jerry Lum gives the details concerning the Hawaiian Ocean View Estates brushfire that threatened the remote Ka’u subdivision on the Big Island of Hawaii on Thursday afternoon.
By nightfall, the red flag warning winds had died down, and the blaze had been contained. In all the fire burned through only a blocks, and the two structures that were burned were said to be vacant.
Residents that were evacuated were returned that evening, as firefighters and volunteers remained on scene, putting out smoldering hotspots late into the night.
