By Stephanie Salazar

The Department of Land and Natural Resources is extending its closure of portions of Mauna Kea Forest Reserve and Kaohe Game Management Area through December 31, 2010, due to continuing extreme fire hazard conditions. The area has received little rainfall over the past year and the vegetation is drier than normal.

Other areas to be closed beginning November 1 and continuing until December 31, or until sufficient rainfall reduces the fire risk in these areas:

CLOSED: Kaohe Lease Cooperative Game Management Area,
Pu‘u Wa‘a Wa‘a Forest Reserve,
Pu‘uanahulu Game Management Area,
Kapapala Ranch Cooperative Game Management Area,
Kapapala Forest Reserve, and
Kahua/Ponoholo Ranch Special Permit Area.

Pohakuloa Training Area will also be closed to public access until further notice by the Department of Defense.

All public activities will be affected by the closure. These activities include, but are not limited, to hunting, hiking, bird watching, off road vehicle use (ATV, motorcycle, OHV, etc.) and commercial activities. For more information on the closures call the Division of Forestry and Wildlife office in Hilo at 974-4221.
