U.S. Congresswoman Mazie Hirono was named the YWCA Hawaii Island “2011 Remarkable Person” during a luncheon in Hilo on Thursday.
The YWCA says Hirono was honored for outstanding leadership and service to make the community a better place.
The third term congresswoman of Hawaii’s 2nd Congressional District – which includes rural Oahu and all the neighbor islands – is the first immigrant woman of Asian ancestry to be elected to and serve in the U.S. House of Representatives. Hirono was born in Fukushima, Japan in 1947, and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1959, when Hawaii became a state.
The YWCA Hawaii Island is also celebrating its 92nd birthday… Since 1919 the organization has been a quote “voice for women, a place of hope and a force for change”
Its mission is to eliminate racism and empower women and girls.
