HILO, Hawaii: It was a proud moment for wayfinders here in Hilo Bay in June of this year, when seven voyaging canoes – arriving from different Pacific Islands – made a landing on the shore of the Big Island.
According to Kaimana Barcarse, Hilo holds a special place in the heart of polynesian navigators…
As the premier base of operations for astronomy… most of which is conducted at the summit of Mauna Kea… Hilo has taken up the responsibilty of promoting the cultural ties between studying the sea, and studying the stars.
The union of those ancient and sacred sciences are on display at the Imiloa Astronomy Center, and spotlighted during the Hilo Wayfinding and Navigation Festival.
This week, we’ll have more on the annual event, now in its 4th year.
