KONA, Hawaii – Police are advising motorists to avoid upper Kaiminani Drive near Wainana Place in Kona.

There is a road closure in effect for the next few hours due to a traffic collision.

Kaiminani Drive has been the location of constant roadwork over the last few months. The federally funded project stretches from 100 feet from the intersection with Highway 190 all the way to Ahiahi Street.

The Hawaii County Department of Publc Works says the improvements will focus on “roadway reconstruction, and drainage improvements that include six-foot shoulders, tie-ins to private driveways on Ka‘iminani, retaining walls and restriping of the roadway.”

Construction began in 2012 and scheduled for completion this year.

UPDATE: 8:15 p.m – Police anticipate opening one lane in about an hour.
