HAWAII ISLAND – Hawaii County Civil Defense has issued a message to residents of Hawaii Island as Tropical Storm Flossie approaches. The audio alert is included above, and will expire at 3 p.m.

According to an 8 a.m. update from the National Weather Service, Tropical Storm Flossie is 490 miles east of Hilo, moving west at 20 miles per hour. (Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 175 miles from the center.) Maximum sustained winds are still measured at 65 miles per hour.

“The National Weather Service has issued a Tropical Storm Warning for the island of Hawaii. Tropical Storm Conditions to include high winds, high surf and surge run up, and heavy rains are expected within the next 36 hours. Presently Tropical Storm Flossie is located approximately 700 miles east of Hilo and moving westward at a speed of 20 MPH. Currently the storm system is presenting with sustained winds of 65 MPH with stronger gusts. In addition high surf and storm surge along with heavy rains and flooding are expected. Residents in coastal areas are advised to take precautions. Boat owners are advised to secure their vessels and complete these activities before tonight. Residents in flood prone areas are advised to expect flooding conditions and to take appropriate measures. Everyone is advised to anticipate possible power outages and interruptions in telephone communications. Please monitor your local news and weather forecasts and additional messages will be broadcasted as information becomes available.”
