HILO, Hawaii – A search for a missing fisherman off Wailuku River was underway after 5:45 p.m. in Hilo on Saturday.

The Hawaii County Fire Department says they received a report of a 34 year old male, who bystanders say tripped and “fell into the Wailuku River while fishing from shore” between Kamehameha Avenue and Keawe Street.

Fire crews searched along shoreline of the river and the waters off shore of the landmark Singing Bridge.

The fire department described the search operation in a dispatch:

HFD units search from land, by boat and in the water with rescue board, peterson bouys, snorkling and with SCUBA along south bank of Wailuku river. Search continued past sunset, then discontinued when initial sweep of the south bank completed up to ‘Singing bridge’. Search to be continued at dawn Sunday 1/5/14.
