6.9 Earthquake in Japan, No Tsunami For Hawaii

STORY SUMMARY

HAWAII ISLAND: Based on all available data, a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii.

HAWAII ISLAND: A powerful earthquake hit east northeast of Miyako, Japan but no tsunami is expected for Hawaii.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported the quake as a magnitude 6.9 off the coast of Honshu, Japan.

“Based on all available data,” reported the PTWC, “a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii. Repeat. A destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii.”

A later Hawaii County Civil Defense message reported the same.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake was a magnitude 6.8.

In March 2011, the magnitude 9.0 Tohoku earthquake devastated Japan and sent tsunami waves to Hawaii, where the Kona-side of the island sustained damage.
