STORY SUMMARY

HILO (BIVN) - Road closures are reported in Hilo as a Flood Advisory is issued for East Hawaii. The Flash Flood Watch continues.

HILO, Hawaii – Kamehameha Ave closed from Manono to Ponahawai due to flooding, police report, as heavy rains continue into Wednesday.

Bayfront Highway is closed as well, police say.

A Flood Advisory is in effect for parts of East Hawaii until 8:15 a.m.

At 5:02 a.m. HST, radar indicated heavy rain near Hilo. Rain was falling at a rate of about 1 inch per hour, the National Weather Service.

Locations in the advisory include but are not limited to Hilo, Hawaiian Paradise Park, Honomu, Mountain View, Keaau, Ninole, Ookala, Laupahoehoe, Pepeekeo, Glenwood, Orchidlands Estates and Hawaiian Acres.

A Flash Flood Watch remains in effect, as the combination of abundant moisture and instability due to an upper level disturbance near Hawaii may trigger heavy rain and flash flooding today.

Forecasters say thunderstorms are also possible over the leeward Big Island this afternoon.
