(BIVN) – Once more, Republican senators are targeting the Affordable Care Act, and Democrats – including Hawaii’s two United States senators – are again taking a stand.

The Graham-Cassidy-Heller-Johnson (GCHJ) proposal repeals the structure and architecture of Obamacare and “replaces it with a block grant given annually to states to help individuals pay for health care,” according to Senator Lindsey Graham, (R-South Carolina). The proposal removes the decisions from Washington and gives states significant latitude over how the dollars are used to best take care of the unique health care needs of the patients in each state, Graham said.

Senator Mazie Hirono gave a this floor speech on Monday.

“Its just a new version of Trumpcare,” Sen. Hirno said, “and I might say, an even worse proposal than the one we defeated in July.”

Meanwhile, New York senator Chuck Schumer – who has been able to strike a few political deals with President Trump in recent weeks – went on the offensive, calling a press conference. “After a few weeks of lying dormant,” Sen. Shumer said, “Trumpcare is back and meaner than ever.”

By Schumer’s side, Hawaii’s other U.S. senator Brian Schatz. “It will take healthcare coverage from millions of people<" Sen. Schatz said, "and Americans who don't lose their coverage will still get hurt with higher premiums or insurance plans that dont cover basic things like mental health, or opioid addiction, or pregnancy. I want to be really clear about what this bill does to Medicaid. It trashes Medicaid. It destroys Medicaid as we know it."
