UPDATE – In a message issued just after noon on Monday, the Hawaiʻi Department of Water Supply says repairs have been completed to the water main break in Pāpaʻikou, restoring water service to customers.
(BIVN) – A second water main break has occurred Monday on Hawaiʻi Island, causing outages and forcing the closure of another school.
A water main break near the Pāpaʻikou Post Office is currently under repair, and the Department of Water Supply estimates work should be completed by this evening.
Officials say Pāpaʻikou customers may experience no water or low water pressure while DWS personnel repair the break.
Hawaiʻi County Civil Defense says Kalanianaole Intermediate and Elementary Schools will be closed for today, as a result.
DWS has stationed a water tanker near the Pāpaʻikou gym for the public’s use.
The first water main break occurred this morning in North Kohala. The Department of Education closed Kohala High School and Kohala Elementary School. Kohala Middle School will close at noon.
