(BIVN) – The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a High Wind Advisory for parts of Hawaiʻi Island in effect from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today.
Northeast winds from 20 to 30 mph with localized gusts near 50 mph are expected.
Impacted areas include Hilo, Hāmākua, Puna, Volcano, Pahala, South Point, Waimea, North Kohala, and Waikoloa.
Forecasters say winds this strong are capable of bringing down weaker tree branches, which could lead to isolated power outages.
Hawaiʻi County Civil Defense issued an alert message this morning, advising residents to secure loose outdoor items and to drive with caution.
