(BIVN) – The Hawaiʻi County Department of Water Supply issued an update on its water service recovery efforts following Hurricane Lala earlier this month.
The Department reported that power has been restored to key infrastructure in Mountain View and Pāhala, and that normal water use may resume in those locations.
The water department also stated a Precautionary Boil Water Notice remains in effect for all customers in Nāʻālehu, Waiohinu, Discovery Harbor, Mark Twain Subdivision, Green Sands Subdivision, and South Point Road areas, until further notice. Crews continue to incrementally restore water service in those areas.
Here is the full break down from the DWS:
Nāʻālehu – Waiohinu (includes Discovery Harbor, Mark Twain Subdivision, Green Sands Subdivision, and South Point Road areas):
- DWS continues to incrementally expand water service areas to Nāʻālehu, Waiohinu, Discovery Harbor, Mark Twain Subdivision, Green Sands Subdivision, and South Point Road areas.
- DWS is boosting water from Nāʻālehu tank to its upper tanks and is also hauling water to Discovery Harbor Off-site and South Point Road tanks.
- As tanks are filled, water service to customers’ taps will slowly be restored. Please limit use to essential needs only to help increase the water stored in these tanks.
- Customers may see fire hydrants open in certain areas of the water systems. This is to force air out of the waterlines and allow water to take its place. If air remains locked in the waterlines, it will cause future water service issues to customers.
- DWS’ precautionary boil water notice remains in effect for all DWS customers, in Nāʻālehu, Waiohinu, Discovery Harbor, Mark Twain Subdivision, Green Sands Subdivision, and South Point Road areas, until further notice.
- As DWS continues to restore water service, it will need to continue to check for leaks in the sections of waterlines that are being refilled with water.
- DWS is locating breaks on the waterline between Haao Springs tank and the South Point Road tank. DWS is fixing the breaks as they are found and is slowly filling up the waterlines with water.
- Potable water tankers are located across from Nāʻālehu Ace Hardware and at the Discovery Harbor Clubhouse for public use. Please use water for Essential Uses only.
Upper Mountain View:
- Hawaiian Electric power has been restored to DWS’ Olaa #7 booster and #8 booster stations. DWS is boosting to water tanks at higher elevations.
- Water service to customers in these areas should be restored today.
- Normal water use may resume.
Pahala:
- Hawaiian Electric power has been restored to the Pahala well. Normal water use may resume.
- Precautionary Boil Water Notice for Pahala is CANCELLED as of 8/20/26.
- Spigots are available on the fire hydrant fronting Kau Hospital for Punaluʻu residents. Please use water for Essential Uses only.
- A 2-inch outlet is available from the fire hydrant fronting Kau Hospital for ranchers to fill water tankers.
