(BIVN) – Most areas within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park reopened on Sunday, following the passage of Hurricane Nolo to the south of Hawaiʻi.
Most areas along Kīlauea summit, as well as the Kahuku Unit in Kaʻū, are now open.
“Trails at the Kahuku Unit will open as staff finish assessments, park officials say,” the National Park Service stated. “Hikers are advised to follow the signs posted at the trailheads and check with staff at the Welcome Center.”
The National Park Service says areas that remain closed are Hilina Pali Road past the Mauna Iki trailhead, Mauna Loa Road past the second cattleguard, Kīpukapuaulu Trail, and the Sulphur Banks Bridge.
“Hikers throughout Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park should be aware of potential overhead hanging branches, loose rocks and uneven terrain on trails,” park officials said. “Park staff will assess conditions and reopen areas when it is safe to do so.”
