(BIVN) – A public meeting will be held this week concerning a plan to establish interim housing units in Nāʻālehu for those displaced by Hurricane Lala.
The meeting will be held on Thursday, October 8th, at the Nāʻālehu Public Library (95-5669 Mamalahoa Highway) from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The Hawaiʻi Department of Human Services plans to provide 12 interim homes in Nāʻālehu for residents displaced by Hurricane Lala. The proposed budget includes one year of housing, utilities and maintenance at no cost to residents. The units will be established adjacent to the Nāʻālehu Library.
Previous information provided by the State estimated the cost to be about $6 million.

Each home will be a two-bedroom, one-bath unit and will include queen size beds, closet space, ceiling fans and air conditioning, a refrigerator and stove with oven, a full-size shower and a washer/dryer.
Officials plan to have the homes ready for occupancy by October 30, 2026.
The homes could have a second use beyond disaster recovery. The structures are eventually intended to serve as interim workforce housing for educators and clinicians, officials say.
For those unable to attend, officials say comments may be submitted to input@communityvoice.net through October 20, 2026.
