UPDATE – (8:40 a.m.) – In an updated message, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said that based on all available data, “a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected, and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaiʻi.”
(BIVN) – A magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck the area of Pitaloza Arriba, Panama on Friday morning, triggering a possible tsunami threat for parts of the Pacific Ocean, including Hawaiʻi.
In a message issued at 8:04 a.m. HST, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center – which initially measured the magnitude of the event at 8.0 – said that “a tsunami threat exists for parts of the Pacific located closer to the earthquake. But it is still too early to determine whether there is a possible tsunami threat to Hawaiʻi.”
The PTWC said that if there is a tsunami threat to Hawaiʻi, the earliest estimated time the hazard might begin is 7:05 p.m. HST tonight (Friday, October 9, 2026).
