(BIVN) – The Hawaiʻi Police Department’s human tracking canine, Trina, helped locate a 70-year-old missing O‘ahu man on a trail within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park earlier this week.
Puna patrol officers received the report of the missing man at noon on Monday, October 19th. The man was last known to be in the Volcano area and had not been seen for more than 24 hours. Due to his age, the man was considered endangered.
The man’s unoccupied rental vehicle was found within Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, prompting a search of the National Park which included aerial assistance provided by a Hawai‘i Fire Department helicopter.
K9 Trina, handled by Officer Christopher Ross of the Area II Juvenile Aid Section, joined in the search. At 7:30 p.m., K9 Trina successfully located the missing man on a trail, approximately two miles from where his rental vehicle was located.
The Oʻahu man was safely carried back to the trailhead and was subsequently transported to Hilo Benioff Medical Center for medical treatment due to dehydration and exposure.

This is the second time in two months that K9 Trina, a three-year-old Labrador Retriever from Sweden, has located a missing person. Police say she was responsible for locating an endangered teenager last month in Waikoloa.
