(BIVN) – An unusual cluster of earthquakes was recorded in the Hāmākua district on Thursday evening.
The earthquakes were of a similar depth (roughly 3 to 6 miles below seal level), with a few reaching a magnitude-3.
Hawaiʻi island often sees earthquake clusters in the areas of Kīlauea and Mauna Loa, but rarely on the flanks of Maunakea. The USGS Alert Level for Maunakea is NORMAL and the volcano is showing no signs of eruption.
UPDATE – (1:30 p.m.) – The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory noted on Friday that the “cluster of about 28 earthquakes 5-10 km deep occurred beneath the north side of Mauna Kea between 2 pm and 10 pm on March 26. The largest were two magnitude 3 earthquakes.”
“These events are not related to magma movement,” the Observatory stated.
