HILO, Hawaii – There is a high surf warning in effect for north and east facing shores of Hawaii Island. The warning is expected to last until Thursday. The above video combines footage shot in Keaukaha at 5:30 pm on Tuesday, with an audio alert message issued by Hawaii County Civil Defense.
Hilo’s Bayfront Highway remained closed on Tuesday, as high surf washed debris onto the roadway.
There is concern that peak wave heights could coincide with high tide around 1:00 am, says civil defense.
The National Weather Service says “these dangerous conditions mean that only highly experienced persons should enter the water. Inexperienced persons should remain off beaches and adjacent beachfront areas. Large breaking surf… Significant shorebreak… And dangerous currents make entering the water very hazardous. Anyone entering the water could face significant injury or death”
