(BIVN) – The Kahuku Unit in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park will reopen to visitors on Thursday, September 3rd.
The Kahuku Unit is located in the Kaʻū district on Hawaiʻi island, and was closed due to damage from heavy rain and strong winds during Hurricane Lala.
From a National Park Service news release issued on Wednesday:
Kahuku and the Kahuku Visitor Contact Station will resume normal operating hours from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday through Sunday. Park staff cleared numerous fallen trees from Kahuku Road and most trails but the road beyond the Lower Palm Trailhead remains deeply rutted by the heavy rains. A 4WD is recommended to access areas above the Lower Palm Trailhead. Kahuku Road remains closed at the cross-fence.
Hikers should be aware of potential overhead hanging branches, loose rocks and uneven terrain on trails.
The September Coffee Talk, “Koʻi: The Hawaiian Adze,” will be held on Saturday, September 26 at 9:30 a.m. Join Volcano artist Tom Pico at the Visitor Contact Station to learn about the different types of koʻi (basalt hand tools) Hawaiians used for cutting trees and shaping canoes, making weapons, bowls and other items.
