Emergency Closure of Kona Airport Reported Due To Runway Crack

STORY SUMMARY

KONA, Hawaiʻi - The runway at Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole was reopened Thursday, with permanent repairs planned for tonight.

(BIVN) – Air operations were temporarily suspended at the Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole on Thursday, after a crack was found on a plane runway.

The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation said crews worked to patch the crack and reopen the Kona airport by 3 p.m. on September 3rd.

The Hawaiʻi DOT said six flights were inbound to Kona at the time the crack was discovered. Three flights were diverted to Kahului Airport.

There will be another Kona airport closure overnight Thursday into Friday – from 11:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. – in order to perform a permanent repair on the runway.
