(BIVN) – The latest from the Central Pacific Hurricane Center continues to reflect an eastward shift in the Hurricane Lowell forecast guidance, nudging the track closer to the western main Hawaiian islands.
Therefore, a Hurricane Watch has been issued for the County of Kauai.
As of 8 p.m. on Sunday evening, Lowell was 510 miles southwest of Honolulu. The storm remains a category 3 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds near 120 miles per hour. Weakening is forecast to begin later tonight into tomorrow, but Lowell is expected to remain a hurricane as it passes near the Hawaiian Islands.
Lowell is expected to pass west of the Kauai coastal waters late Monday through Monday night.
The Hawaii County Civil Defense issued this updated message on Sunday evening:
Due to the effects of Hurricane Lowell as it continues to move west of Hawaii Island as a Category 3 Hurricane, the following are in effect;
A High Surf Warning for all south and west facing shores of Hawaii Island, from Cape Kumukahi in Puna to Upolu Point in North Kohala, through Tuesday.
A Flood Watch for Hawaii Island, through Tuesday.
A High Surf Warning means large breaking surf, significant shore break, and dangerous currents exist that could cause injury and death.
Due to Hurricane Lowell, please be advised:
Westside County beach parks remain closed.
Avoid entering the ocean under these life-threatening conditions.
Those with shoreline property and boats in high surf areas should take necessary precautions.
Do not cross flowing water in a vehicle or on foot – turn around, don’t drown.
Residence in flood-prone areas, be on the alert for flooding conditions and take action to safeguard life and property.
