STORY SUMMARY

SOUTH KOHALA, Hawaiʻi - The Hawaiʻi County Department of Water Supply says new notice replaces the Water Restriction Notice issued last week.

(BIVN) – Water use in coastal South Kohala has been further restricted, as an Essential Use Only Notice has replaced the existing Water Restriction Notice for customers in the area.

The Hawaiʻi County Department of Water Supply issued the updated notice on Monday, mandating that water usage in the affected areas must be restricted to essential needs only, such as drinking, cooking, and personal hygiene purposes.

The affected areas include Kawaihae, Kawaihae Harbor, Hāpuna Beach Resort, Mauna Kea Beach Resort, Puakō, and the Mauna Lani Resort.

Officials say the Essential Use Only Notice is required in order to maintain water storage in tanks for all water customers while DWS repairs its wells.

“This Essential Water Use Only request will remain in effect until water system conditions improve,” the Department said.

The water department provided these details on the Essential Use Only Notice:

Customers are asked to use water only for essential health and safety needs, including:

  • Drinking
  • Cooking and food preparation
  • Necessary personal hygiene
  • Necessary sanitation
  • Other essential household or health needs

PLEASE TEMPORARILY AVOID NON-ESSENTIAL WATER USE

Until this notice is lifted, customers are asked to discontinue or postpone nonessential uses of water, including:

  • Irrigation and lawn watering
  • Washing vehicles or boats
  • Filling swimming pools or spas
  • Pressure washing
  • Other unnecessary or high-volume water use

DWS says it will notify customers when normal water use may resume.
