(BIVN) – A Wind Advisory has been issued for Hawaiʻi island summits through early Thursday evening.
The National Weather Service says southwest winds of 30 to 50 mph, with gusts up to 60 mph, will be possible at higher elevations of Maunakea and Mauna Loa.
“Winds this strong can make driving and walking dangerous,” the forecasters warned. “The winds can forcefully open doors and damage hinges or slam doors shut, possibly causing injuries.”
“Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high profile vehicle,” the National Weather Service stated.
On Wednesday, the Maunakea Access Road was closed to the public at the Visitor Information Station “due to high winds gusting over 68 mph, causing hazardous conditions,” rangers said. The road will reopen when conditions become safe.
