STORY SUMMARY

KONA, Hawaiʻi - FBI Honolulu is enforcing FAA-imposed temporary flight restrictions around Kailua-Kona during the IRONMAN World Championship on Saturday, October 10.

(BIVN) – With the IRONMAN World Championship being held in Kona on Saturday, October 10, a temporary flight restriction, or TFR, is in place over Kailua Village. The TFR also applies to drones.

“The FBI is enforcing No Drone Zones around Kailua-Kona in support of the IRONMAN World Championship,” said FBI Honolulu Acting Special Agent in Charge Ryan C. Noonan in a news release. “To keep athletes, spectators, and the community safe, our agents and law enforcement partners—under Department of Justice authority—can use specialized detection tools to identify and seize drones that violate Temporary Flight Restrictions.”

The FBI says violations of a TFR can result in civil fines up to $75,000, criminal fines up to $100,000, up to a year in prison, and seizure of the drone.

Description of the airspace restriction over Kailua Village from the FAA

Before flying a drone, operators should always check airspace restrictions using the FAA-approved B4UFLY apps or visit tfr.faa.gov, the FBI says.
