STORY SUMMARY

HAWAIʻI - Forecasters say a significant pattern change is expected Monday night through at least Thursday as deep tropical moisture moves over the islands.

(BIVN) – The National Weather Service in Honolulu issued a Hydrologic Outlook on Saturday afternoon, reporting that heavy rain and potential flooding is expected from late Monday night through Thursday afternoon.

“A significant pattern change is expected Monday night through at least Thursday as deep tropical moisture is brought north,” the NWS statement reads. “A combination of surface lows and troughs will bring exceptionally moist air over the eastern end of the state beginning Monday night and extending to all islands Tuesday.”

The forecasters say heavy rain and thunderstorms will be possible throughout this period. A Flood Watch may eventually be issued if models continue to show the potential for heavy rain, forecasters said.

“Upper level winds may be just strong enough to enable the development of organized convection in the form of squall lines or MCSs,” or Mesoscale Convective Systems, the National Weather Service stated. “If these form, the chance of extreme rainfall rates goes up. Finally, ensembles indicate that Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday is the most likely time of heavy rain and thunderstorms.”

“Models have not converged on details yet, so exact locations, timing, and rainfall amounts are not certain,” the National Weather Service stated. “Please be prepared for periods of heavy rain this coming week.”
