HONOLULU, Hawaii – The initial period of enrollment for Kanaiolowalu – the Native Hawaiian roll – has ended.
Over 107,000 people signed up to rebuild the Hawaiian nation, according to the Native Hawaiian Roll Commission. The commission will now continue to process ancestry confirmations over the coming weeks.
The numbers surged in the last month, thanks to a contribution of over 100,000 names from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, which is charged with overseeing the effort.
OHA CEO Dr. Kamana’opono Crabbe updated the legislature just a few days before the close of the registry.
Kanaiolowalu has spent millions in an attempt to build the registry.
