Hu Honua Bioenergy is holding a private conference with company members, as well as University of Hawaii’s College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources, in order to fine tune the plans for a 24-megawatt bioenergy plant on the Big Island.
The facility will occupy the old Pepeekeo Power Plant, which is being converted to handle biomass. The goal is to produce a renewable source of electricity for the island.
The company says it will use a high yield tree called leucaena to produce the power. The company is even looking ways to process the tree so that area cattle ranchers may feed their livestock with the same harvested biomass.
