Officials and developers went before the state Land Use Commission on Thursday, as Forest City Hawaii seeks a district boundary amendment for about 270 acres in what will be known as Kamakana Village at Keahuolu.
Public input on the project was short, and entirely positive. The testifiers were mostly comprised of representatives of the construction industry, however, as much of the tesimony was focused affordable housing as it job creation.
The National Park service, which manages the Kaloko-Honokohau park in the same general area, said they also support the project, but are concerned about cumulitive effects from a number of planned developments.
The Queen Liliuokalani Trust, which sold the property to Hawaii Housing Finance and Development Corp, is intervening in the case. Attorney Benjamin Kudo argued against the numerous exemptions being proposed for the project.
The hearing continues Friday at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott resort.
