A large lava breakout in Kalapana put residents of the nearby Kalapana Gardens Subdivision on edge this weekend.

The fast moving breakout was documented by USGS staff and residents like Bo Lozoff, who uploaded this video to YouTube.

The flow started from the lava tube that feeds the weakened Puhi-o-Kalaikini ocean entry.

The fresh lava crossed over the old Highway 130 and forced the County Viewing Area to move back a few hundred feet to the east. On Sunday, the lava was about 330 feet from the nearest Kalapana home.

By Monday evening, however, the breakout had apparently stalled, affording residents another moment of relief.
