KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii – The National Weather Service has extended the Flash Flood Warning for West Hawaii until until 9:45 p.m. HST.
At 6:28 p.m. HST, radar showed very heavy rain falling over the lower Kona slopes from near the airport to Keauhou. Forecasters say rain is falling at rates of 3 to 4 inches an hour.
The Hawaii Police Department reports a road closure at the Kuakini Highway and Oni Oni Street intersection in Kailua-Kona due to heavy ponding and run off. “Motorist are being asked to avoid the area and to take alternate routes,” read a police alert. “Crews will be working on clearing debris and repairing large pot holes.”
Locations in the warning include but are not limited to Kailua-Kona, Captain Cook, Honaunau, Honaunau-Napoopoo, Kahaluu-Keauhou, Kealakekua, Keauhou and Holualoa.
