KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii – The brushfire that threatened homes in Kailua-Kona yesterday rekindled today.
As of noon, Hawaii County fire crews resumed aerial water drops, as well as on-ground spraying, as the fire makai of Lako Street continues to flare up.
Crews say the flareups near the Komohana Kai and Kamani Trees subdivisions are creating a lot of smoke but are all contained within a 25-acre area with fire breaks.
The fire of unknown origin began Wednesday around 11:30 a.m. The blaze broke out on a vacant lot and burned mauka toward Kololia St. and Halawai Pl., where county fire fighting units made a stand to protect residential homes from the fast approaching fire. Some residents left their homes and an evacuation center was set up at the Old Kona Airport. It took four hours to get the fire under control. No one was injured and there was no loss of property.
