UPDATE: The USGS measures this earthquake as a Magnitude 7.0, and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center is now in concurrence.
HAWAII – The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reports a 7.3 earthquake occurred near Vanuatu at 9:33 a.m. on Thursday, April 28.
Based on all available data, officials say a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii. Hawaii County Civil Defense relayed the message quickly to residents following the quake.
The Hawaiian Islands are safe, but scientists said hazardous tsunami waves from this earthquake are possible within 300 km of the epicenter along the coasts of Vanuatu.
