HAMAKUA – The Hawaii County Council Committee on Planning voted to halt decisions on rezoning applications for projects in Hamakua until the district’s community development plan is adopted.
Hamakua councilwoman Valerie Poindexter introduced the resolution, as planners enter the final phases of the CDP for the district.
POSTPONES COUNCIL ACTION ON REZONING APPLICATIONS IN THE HĀMĀKUA DISTRICT, WAIPIʻO THROUGH KAIWIKI, UNTIL THE HĀMĀKUA COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PLAN IS ADOPTED BY ORDINANCE, OR UNTIL JUNE 30, 2017, WHICHEVER SHALL OCCUR FIRST – The postponement Seeks to demonstrate the County’s commitment to the Community Development Plan process as a guiding principle for well-planned and responsible future growth in the Hāmākua district.
Public testimony supported Poindexter’s resolution. The measure will next go before the full council.
Meanwhile, the next Hāmākua CDP Steering Committee Meeting will be held on Saturday, September 10, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Pāpaʻikou Community Center.
