(BIVN) – Hawaii County Civil Defense issued this message at 8:15 p.m. Thursday, following a magnitude 8.2 earthquake off Mexico earlier this evening:
This is a Civil Defense Message for Thursday, September 7 at 8:15 PM.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center confirms that the earthquake that occurred at 6:50 tonight HST off Mexico did not cause a TSUNAMI THREAT for the Island or State of Hawaii.
I repeat, there is NO TSUNAMI THREAT to the Island or State of Hawaii from the Mexico earthquake which occurred at 6:50 tonight HST off Mexico.
As a precaution, be aware of possible strong currents or higher than normal sea levels, especially between 3 AM and 5 AM tomorrow morning.
I repeat, NO TSUNAMI THREAT to the State or Island of Hawaii from the earthquake that occurred tonight off Mexico.
