(BIVN) – When you spend as much time on Hawaii’s lava fields as John Tarson, you are bound to see some special sights.

On Friday morning, during the “magic hour” just before sunrise, the lava tour guide captured several mesmerizing images of the 61g lava flow as he meandered the coastal plain below Pulama pali.

The photo at the top of the page, which appears to stare into a molten doorway to the underworld, is actually a close-up of this surface breakout.

None of these flows poses a threat to nearby communities at this time, the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory repeated this morning.
