(BIVN) – A Flash Flood Watch remained in effect for Hawaii Island on Tuesday morning, as deep moisture met an upper level disturbance to bring periods heavy rain, especially to windward areas.
A Flood Advisory was in effect for East Hawaii this morning. According to the National Weather Service:
At 4:40 AM HST, radar indicated moderate to heavy rain over the windward slopes of the Big Island, with rainfall rates between one-half and one inch per hour. The heaviest rain was upslope from Hilo affecting portions of Saddle Road, with persistent showers also soaking the Volcano area.
A Winter Storm Warning also continues for the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa.
The road to the summit of Mauna Kea is closed at the Visitor Information Station at the 9,200 foot elevation, ranger say, due to snow and ice accumulating on the roadways, making for icy roads and unsafe road and driving conditions.
East facing shores were also under a High Surf Advisory, just a few days after larger waves shut down beaches in Keaukaha. The High Surf Warning on Thanksgiving Day brought 20 foot waves crashing into the Big Island.
