(BIVN) – A powerful earthquake struck 52 miles southeast of Pondaguitan, Philippines on Friday, triggering a tsunami threat for parts of the Pacific.
Emergency officials reported that based on all available data, there is no tsunami threat to Hawaiʻi from the earthquake.
Analysts believe the quake, first reported as a Magnitude 7.2, may have created hazardous tsunami waves for coasts located within 300 km of the epicenter.
Later, the USGS appeared to revise the measurement of the quake to a Magnitude 6.9, and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said tsunami waves are forecast to be less than 0.3 meters above the tide level for the coasts of Indonesia, Palau and the Philippines.
UPDATE: USGS now has the earthquake measured at a Magnitude 7.0.
