(BIVN) – The summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa are under a Winter Weather Advisory issued by the National Weather Service on Saturday evening.
“A cold trough aloft and deep moisture over the Big Island of Hawaiʻi will bring snow to the high mountains through Sunday,” forecasters reported.
Webcams on the Mauna Kea observatories are already showing snow on the mountain.
“Snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches, with localized amounts up to 4 inches, and ice accumulations of around two tenths are expected,” the National Weather Service stated.
Maunakea rangers have closed the access road to the summit at the Visitor Information Station “due to heavy snowfall and icy roads, below freezing temperatures, high humidity and high winds,” a message posted at 5:23 p.m. stated. “Because of the continuing inclement weather, the road closure will be maintained through the night.”
Winter Weather Advisory is expected to be in effect until 6 p.m. Sunday.
