GM draws the line over Limbaugh’s recent controversial comments

HILO, Hawaii:  A Hilo based talk radio station has apparently drawn the line over a recent comments made by a big name in talk radio.

New West Broadcasting announced today that it is discontinuing the Rush Limbaugh program on KPUA AM 670 effective immediately.

Limbaugh – the conservative talk radio icon and influential Republican booster – has come under fire in recent days for calling a female Georgetown University law student a “slut” and a “prostitute,” after she called for contraception to be covered by health insurance.

Chris Leonard, President and General Manager of New West issued the following statement on Monday morning:

“We have always encouraged spirited discussion about national and local issues on KPUA and from time to time those discussions may be deemed by some to be objectionable. We are strong believers in the first amendment and have recognized Mr. Limbaugh’s right to express opinions that often times differ from our own, but it has never been our goal to allow our station to be used for personal attacks and intolerance. The most recent incident has crossed a line of decency and a standard that we expect of programming on KPUA whether it is locally produced or a syndicated program like the Rush Limbaugh show.

While much of the national debate regarding this issue is now being framed in political terms, the decision for us is one of decency and responsibility. Regardless of one’s political views on the issue being discussed, we feel the delivery was degrading and the continued comments over several days to be egregious. As a result, we are discontinuing the Rush Limbaugh program on KPUA effective immediately.”

  1. Actions like this make me proud of Hilo. I’m not from there but my father and family are.

  2. Good! Even thou that some folks actually think he says it like it is their wrong. He does not represent our constitution’s right of free speech. Rush promotes negativity and the ugliness of bad social behaviour.

  3. New West Broadcasting KPUA AM 670,
It’s always wise to let the political dust settle before making such a drastic decision, least you find the proverbial egg on your face. Things aren’t always as they may first seem. Rush’s advertisers who bailed are now begging to come back, once they learned the truth. Seems this ‘Sandra Fluke’ was not quite what was being presented to the public (see below link). As a registered Independent (meaning I have the ability to see both sides) I have to wonder just where your policing of what we are allowed to hear went when the left/progressives labeled patriots as ‘tea baggers’ or as left leaning broadcasters labeled Sarah Palin’s daughter a slut? Come on, emotions get heated when politics are involved. People make fools out of themselves albeit left or right leaning. You should know to let things cool off and the truth come out. Eventually it does. This call is unwarranted.

  4. you exhibited the same intolerance and reactionary move that Mr Limbaugh was accused of. Maybe next time you should have a debate , be patient and also wait for more facts to come out before you act prematurely. You owe it to your listeners.
Also, he did apologize later didn’t he. ?
If you insist on being a filter for your listeners..just be fair and apply your judgements to all..not just one side of the debate. Aloha
