Tuesday night’s bioenergy meeting held in Honokaa seemed at times like an election season candidates forum, as six companies hoped to win the public’s confidence by presenting their plans for renewable energy at different locations along the Hamakua Coast. A Senate committee hearing held last month in Hilo on the topic of bioenergy prompted State Senator Dwight Takamine and State Rep. Mark Nakashima to call for this meeting, after confusion over the DLNR’s no-bid lease process created public outcry. Nakashima was present for Tuesday’s meeting in Honokaa, and acted as a moderator.
