Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows, Hawaii’s premier cultural resort, today celebrated its 30th anniversary since opening on February 14, 1983.
The occasion was celebrated with a blessing by Kahu David Ka’upu, who was there for the grand opening on this day 30 years ago.
Tokyu Corporation has been the owner of the Mauna Lani Bay since its opening. The resort was developed by a partnership between the former landowner, Francis Hyde I’i Brown, Hawaii’s “Mr. Golf” and Noboru Goto, Chairman of Tokyu Corporation of Japan. The two men shared a common love for the sport of golf and a passion for the environment that later lay the foundation of their vision for the resort. They planned a resort retreat that would reward its guests while preserving its history and sense of place.
As the concept evolved, Hawaiian elders gave this unique place the name Mauna Lani, meaning “Mountain Reaching Heaven.” This name reveres Hawaii’s Mother Earth, the volcanoes and their goddess. For Hawaiians, it is a name that sets the land apart as a place requiring informed land stewardship, or the caring for a special land.
2013 will be an exciting year for the Mauna Lani Bay, which will see the hotel undergo a $30 million renovation.
