A big, yellow school bus carrying political campaigners made its way up and down the east side of the Big Island recently. The Neil Abercrombie “School Bus Listening Tour” traveled to a dozen Big Island rural communities from June 24 to 27, as a part of the former congressman’s 2010 gubernatorial campaign.

“As a Congressman, I worked closely with Sen. Dan Inouye and Sen. Dan Akaka to make sure that federal funding and projects benefited all the islands,” Abercrombie said in a media release. “I was able to respond to inquiries and casework from Pepe`ekeo to Pahala but now that I am running for Governor, I have a greater understanding of the uniqueness of each community.

“I have already visited with many residents all over the Hawaii County – from Hawi to Miloloi`i – and I am eager to personally meet and talk with more residents, with our seniors, teachers, farmers, hotel workers and small business operators from Waimea to Ka`u,” Abercrombie said. “I want to learn firsthand about their views, concerns and priorities.”

Abercrombie’s School Bus Listening Tour began in Hilo at the Hilo High School cafeteria – where this “YWCA” dance video was filmed – then traveled up the Hamakua Coast to Waimea, before heading south into Puna and Ka`u.
